“I don’t think the substance of the project is as important as the process of skilled thinking that the thesis demonstrates. I think that’s where the practitioner community tends to be speaking out of both sides of their mouth. They say they really want critical thinking, but they doubt that the scientific approach develops that. They don’t make that connection because the substance of the document may not appeal to them as being something of interest from a practical perspective. If the student really went on an academic track—meaning more development of theory or empirical methods—it may or may not be seen as interesting or relevant.”
